Santa Rosa Addition Project

Framing a 12x20 backyard studio addition in Santa Rosa: stem wall foundation reused, stained slab, loft, and a gable end tie-in to the garage.

The build

12x20 Studio Addition with Loft

This Santa Rosa addition started as an old lean-to storage structure with a stem wall foundation that was still solid after years of use. Rather than tear it out, we're building on it. The old siding came off, that wall got sheared, and the new structure is being framed right off the gable end of the existing garage. Inside the reused stem wall, we laid a vapor barrier and tied a rebar grid before pouring a new slab. That slab will be finished smooth and stained rather than covered, so it doubles as the finished floor. Plywood sheathing is going up on the new framing, and the roof will be woven into the existing garage roofline rather than butted against it, so the addition reads as part of the original structure instead of an afterthought. The finished footprint is 12 by 20 feet, with a loft built into the framing to add usable space without pushing the walls out. It's sized and finished well enough that an adult could stay in it comfortably for a visit, not just a kid's hideaway. Work is in progress, with framing and rough concrete complete and finish work ahead.
