Petaluma Redwood Deck Project

This Petaluma backyard needed more than a facelift. The old structure was on its way out, and a mature redwood tree had sent roots deep under the footprint. We spent two full days pulling roots before we could set a single post. No shortcuts on that part — do it wrong and the whole deck settles unevenly within a year. Once the ground was clear, we built a redwood deck sized to work around the homeowner's existing hot tub, with a matching redwood privacy fence topped in lattice for light and airflow without losing the screening. Built-in bench seating gives the space a place to sit that doesn't eat into the usable deck area. The finished product is straightforward: solid redwood decking, a fence that frames the space instead of just enclosing it, and a layout built around how the homeowner actually uses the yard — soaking in the hot tub, sitting out with neighbors, not fighting roots or a sagging deck underfoot.
