The build

Second-Story Deck with Paver Patio

This Santa Rosa project connects a second-story living space to the backyard below. The upper deck runs the width of the house in composite decking with white vinyl/composite railing, giving the homeowners a clean, low-maintenance surface that holds up through North Bay summers and winters alike. Planter boxes built into the railing line add a bit of green without eating into deck space. A staircase drops from the deck down to a brick paver patio, tying the two levels together into one usable outdoor space. Below the deck, redwood lattice skirting closes off the understructure, turning what's usually a dead, unfinished area into a finished wall that matches the rest of the build. A pergola frame anchors the patio's shaded corner. The paver patio itself does the heavy lifting for everyday use — room for a table, a grill, and seating, all connected back to the house by the stair. It's a good example of what we mean when we say the landscaping around a deck matters as much as the deck itself. A well-built structure needs a finished space to land in.
