Sonoma Pergola Project

This Sonoma backyard had a paver patio that sat exposed to full sun most of the day. We built a redwood pergola off the back of the house to give the space real shade and a reason to use it. The frame ties into the house structure and runs out over the existing pavers, so no patio work was needed, just solid post and beam construction sized to carry the load. We used metal bracket connectors at the major joints instead of relying on notched wood alone. It keeps the structure square, makes the connections stronger, and gives the framing a clean, exposed look from underneath. The retractable fabric shade canopy runs between the beams and can be opened or closed depending on the sun and time of day. We've been building more of these across the county lately. Homeowners want outdoor space they can actually use in the afternoon heat, not just a patio that bakes from noon on. This one's still in progress, with framing complete and the shade system installed, cooling off the back of the house and giving the family a real hangout spot.
